Handcrafted by Byron & Gómez, featured by Teer & Co
In January 2021 we welcomed Charles Byron and Maria del Mar Gómez of Byron & Gómez into the Teer & Co fold of Designer-Makers for bespoke commission enquiries, and shared some examples of work they had designed and made for private clients around that time.
The arrangement we have with Charles and Maria simply means that when a customer of Teer & Co wishes to discuss their own vision for a bespoke piece, we can propose to work with Charles and Maria if we feel their talents lend themselves to help realise our customer’s brief, assuming of course their availability and fees are also compatible. We then Co-Create the commission with the chosen designer-maker and our client.
Today, we hope to inspire your imagination with three stunning pieces that Byron & Gómez have designed and made more recently for their clients.
Molecular Desk
This beautiful desk was a gift from wife to husband.
The brief, simply to tame the chaos of his desk, was wide open. The husband in question is a medical researcher and this vocation was to provide the conceptual foundations for the project. Taking inspiration at first from molecular models of organic compounds and then more broadly from organic structures in general, Charles and Maria designed a leg structure that was highly sculptural.
Right from the start they wanted to include hexagons in the design, this is a shape that is ubiquitous at every scale in the natural world from the six carbon rings that form the core of many molecules to the macro scale honeycomb structure. They gravitated towards bulbous joints as this is both practical, giving additional strength where needed, and made in white maple gives a look reminiscent of bone.
There are also a number of triangles to be found in the leg structure as this is the simplest rigid geometry which gives the legs as much strength as possible with as little material as possible creating a visually lightweight structure. This is once again an imitation of nature which gravitates toward efficient use of matter.
Whilst the legs are a flowing and flamboyant representation of nature the desktop and drawer cabinet stand starkly in opposition. Their orthographic style of straight lines and 90 degree angles with its regular repeating patterns is a representation of the artificial. This juxtaposition of artificial and natural encapsulates science.
To give this gift even greater significance the desktop and drawer cabinet were made from a wind felled Lucombe Oak from the clients own estate, a particular variety of the evergreen Holm oak. This oak had a wonderfully wild grain and fiery colour and whilst challenging to use the results are undeniably stunning.

Helen Dining Table and Dresser
Charles and Maria designed and made this commission as a present from mother to daughter.
Their client wanted to encourage her daughter’s love for drawing and, at the same time, gift her a piece of furniture for her new home that would become a beloved family heirloom and always have a sense of place and time. A piece that speaks the story of love between mother and daughter at this specific moment in their lives.
An extending dining table, that on the centre has an easel with paper storage, two troughs for art supplies or cutlery with lids that also hold ceramic tiles and serve as hot plates. Table extends from 6 to 12-14 seating. The fully extended table shows the beautifully crafted tile design, a ceramic table runner.
The extension leaves hang on the wall behind the grand piano as a panelled art piece, transforming themselves from functional to a work of art.

Pippa Dining Table
An understated and beautiful design, the Pippa dining table is full of gentle curves around the columns, along the length, width and profile of the table top.
Charles and Maria created this piece for Chapter Interiors, a Somerset based interior design duo Pippa and David Musrie, who were looking for a table that took inspiration and had a similar feel to some of Joaquim Tenreiro 1950’s dining table designs that integrate two strong solid wood columns with an ample table top, usually veneered.
Made in solid European Prime Oak throughout and, on this occasion, Charles and Maria fumed it with Ammonia to produce a rich dark brown tone. The Ammonia reacts with the natural tannins in the Oak to change the colour of the timber.
Dimensions: L 2.8m x W 1.2m x H .7m This piece can be made to a bespoke size.
Whilst we represent Charles and Maria primarily for bespoke commission enquiries, we can take orders on some of the pieces they have made previously for private clients, some of which can be seen here.
Lead times change frequently, however, currently, Charles and Maria are booked up on projects until end February 2023. So if they were to design something for a new client they would design in the coming months with production starting early March 2023 and completion can vary from 2-6 months depending on the complexity of the piece, sometimes more.
